Hawker Here, Hawker There, Hawker Everywhere!

Lunchtime at Lau Pa Sat
I did a bit of googling and found out 2 of the closest definitions I could incorporate with the word hawker in Singapore.

hawker; One who sells goods aggressively, especially by calling out.
hawker; a person who travels from place to place selling goods.

Oh well.. none of them comes close to what hawker really is in Singapore. Hawker or hawker center in Singapore means food, food and a lot of food! Sometimes also considered as a food court, a hawker center is an area usually in an open air setting beside the street with a wide selection food stalls serving mostly local food.. fast food style! And oh.. you can find a hawker center almost everywhere in Singapore even around the most remote neighborhood. Food Repulic, Kopi Tiam and Food Junction are just some of the popular food courts you can find in almost all shopping malls serving similar treats you can find in hawker centers.

Chicken Rice, Laksa, Yong Tau Foo, Chicken Briyani, Hokkien Mee, Mee Siam, Nasi Lemak, Satay, Chicken Wings.. name it.. they got it all and a lot more! Watch out for the stalls with long queue cause they are probably really really good or really really cheap.

Don't forget to bring your tissues cause they don't usually give them. You can also use the tissue to reserve seats! Be patient with the Aunties and Uncles who will instantly clean your table right after you finish eating. And don't worry if you don't get a seat cause you are sure to get an available seat somewhere within 15 minutes.

It can be a bit noisy at times but the festive mood in hawker centers is what makes the experience truly memorable. Pig out and try all the sumptuous mouth watering eats Singapore's famous hawker centers has to offer! Bon appetit! Enjoy lah!

Food costs form as cheap as S$2.50 to S$5.00

  1. It's okay to forget tissue because there will usually one or a few people going from table to table selling a few packs for SGD1. You forgot to mention that most (if not all?) are not airconditioned, so it will most likely be tolerable to insanely hot. If you do take away instead, don't be surprised if they charge you a few cents more.
